What moved overnight, and how it reaches Indian markets. Prior session: Tue 18 Aug.

The overnight story

Two things happened while India slept, and both arrived from outside. The first was a semiconductor unwind that started on Wall Street and landed hardest in Asia — the Kospi fell 6.39% and triggered a circuit breaker, the Nikkei fell 2.82%. The second was a bond and oil squeeze out of the US–Iran standoff: Brent has risen for four straight sessions to just under $92, and the US 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.31%, its highest level since 2007.

How this reaches India: rising US long-term yields raise the discount rate global investors apply to equities everywhere, hitting long-duration, high-growth names hardest — which is why chipmakers led the overnight fall rather than followed it. Brent near $92 reaches India through three channels at once: the current account, imported inflation, and the rupee, which touched a two-week low of 95.66 with the RBI intervening for an eighth consecutive session.

Indian markets closed lower on Tuesday for a third straight session on the Sensex and a sixth on the Nifty, with IT the heaviest drag. GIFT Nifty was trading around 24,206–24,240 ahead of the open, pointing to a flat-to-mildly-positive start.

Both institutional pools were net buyers on a day the index fell 0.55% — a combination worth noting, since it indicates the day's selling pressure was concentrated elsewhere while the index-level decline sat mostly in a handful of large IT names. Note: several widely syndicated reports carried these two figures transposed; the numbers above are cross-checked against NSE-sourced data on two independent platforms and tagged Cross-checked, not Primary, above — NSE's own FII/DII report was not directly reachable at the time of writing.
